Meet...Icarus The Owl

Today I want to introduce you to

They are an indie rock, pop/punk band that blends math rock style to perfection hailing from Portland, Oregon. I first heard of this band when the guitar player from this band started following me on twitter and for some reason I decided to check his band out, and I’m glad I did. They have a remarkable way of mixing the technical instrumentation with melody laden riffs and vocals. They released their first album entitled ‘The Spotless Mind’[Free Download Here] and now are working on an EP. Follow along my friends and get to know this amazing band.

Tony King: Hey thanks for taking to time out to talk with me. Introduce yourself for those who aren’t familiar with you?

Joey: We are Icarus The Owl. My name is Joey and I sing and play guitar.

King: How did you guys meet and form the band?

Joey: Mark(Drums) and I (Joey) played in a previous band together. I met Ryan(bass) through a mutual friend, and I met Tanner(guitar) via craigslist/internet dating site.

King: Internet dating site? That’s awesomely strange (Laughs). How long have you been together?

Joey: This band has been together for a year and a half.

King: The band has a distinct sound incorporating a multitude of styles. What music/bands inspired your band?

Joey: I personally listen to a lot of softer stuff and indie rock. But I'd say that Thrice is one of biggest influences. They can play any style they want and still sound like Thrice.

King: "The Spotless Mind" is filled with an eclectic bunch of songs. How was the writing and recording process for this record? How long did it take?

Joey: The Spotless Mind has songs or at least parts of songs that I had written a long time ago for my old band, but I never really developed. I took those and other songs that I had been writing for the past 2 years and structured them. Once I have a song written, I will bring it to the practice space where we add the little bells and whistles as well as drum parts. A lot of looping one riff over and over again until we find the perfect beat for it. We write out our song structures on giant white pieces of paper and tape them up on the wall, so we know where we are at time signature/structure wise while we are playing it.

King: Let’s talk a little bit about the song “The Extortionist”. It features some frantic tapping guitars and is very melody driven track. What made you guys decide to make a video for this song?

Joey: This song is a fan favorite off the album. I think it encompasses a lot of what we are about sound wise. The song is about getting what you love and are passionate about ripped away from you, and I think that is something universal that we all experience in some form- we thought it'd be neat to portray that feeling in a video.

King: How did the concept for the music video come about?

Joey: Our Director read the lyrics to the song and came up with this metaphor having to do with food, and we all really liked it and fit perfectly with what the song is about.

King: So I hear you’re working on a new EP featuring the song “She Taught Me Minesweeper”. How many songs are going to be on this record and when shall we be expecting it?

Joey: Right now there are 4 or 5 tracks on it. We haven't decided if we are going to do more then that. It should be released in 2011. Not sure about specifics though.

King: I know you’ve done some touring of the west coast. How was the experience?

Joey: We have toured quite a bit. We’ve toured everything west of Indiana with this band. It's been great. It's always nice to see people at the shows that are into us.

King: Any chances of an east coast tour in the U.S.?

Joey: Definitely! We are hitting the road in January for 2 months. It will be a national tour with our buddies Lights Out Dancing and This Years Fashion.

King: Perfect! I hope I get a chance to head out to one of your shows and rock out with you guys. Well Joey thanks so much for talking with me and allowing us to share your music and thoughts with our readers. Any thing else you would like to add?

Joey: Thank you! download our music! :)
